I just discovered that I have Graves disease. Before I found out I was having eye problems?
I went to an eye doctor twice due to the pressure and tension felt in both my eyes. It was frustrating when he found nothing wrong because it hurts all the time. My vision is blurred I do not like the light and sometimes I find myself pushing the lids down to feel some relief. My eyes are wide open and close all the way, but I was wondering if it is of the symptoms of eye disease graves?
Sorry to hear you are having problems with your thyroid. Please take some comfort in knowing that can be controlled through medication however. As for the eyes, yes you can have symptoms with them as well with this disease. In the ophthalmopathy Graves, his eyes bulge beyond its protective orbit (exophthalmos). This occurs when the tissues and muscles behind your eyes swell and make the eyeball to move forward. Because their eyes can be pushed too far forward, the front surface of the eyes can become dry. Smokers with Graves' disease are five times more likely than nonsmokers to develop Graves' ophthalmopathy. This is possibly smoking prevents the absorption of anti-thyroid drug used to treat Graves' disease. Graves ophthalmopathy may cause these mild signs and symptoms: Excess tearing and sensation of grit or sand in one or both eyes red or swollen eyes expansion of space between eyelids Swollen eyelids and tissues around the eyes Less sensitivity to light often "Graves' ophthalmopathy can produce these signs and symptoms severe corneal ulcers limited double vision Blurred vision or eye movements reduced Vision Hope this helped you understand a little better and not to panic. Best of luck to you.
